Coronation Street newcomer Sue Johnston has revealed that one of the reasons she joined the soap was to be nearer her grandson.
The actress is to play Gloria, mother of Rover's Return landlady Stella.
Johnston told The Sun: "My son lives in Manchester and he's just had my first grandchild.
"So it made sense to be working where the baby is."
Gloria will upset the Weatherfield residents when she moves into the Rover's next month.
Johnston added: "Gloria doesn't endear herself to everyone - she's a real Coronation Street matriarch."
The 68-year-old will appear on our screens in September as her original scenes had to be cut when she fell ill.
A source said: "It's taken a bit of time to write Sue back in because the writers needed to find the perfect scenario to introduce her character."
The insider continued: "From the few days Sue was in before she fell ill, everyone was impressed at how wonderfully she fitted in."
