The countdown to the new series of Strictly Come Dancing is well and truly under way and as expected the rumour mill is going into overdrive with whisperings about who might be dazzling on the dance-floor this year…

A number of high profile stars have been tipped to take part in the 2012 series and it looks like it could be one of the glitziest ever.

Former X Factor judge and current Australia’s Got Talent panellist Dannii Minogue is just one of the stars who is being linked to the show.

Dan had been tipped for a big return to X Factor earlier this year, but is rumoured to have turned down the position in the hope of rekindling her relationship with former flame and father of her son Ethan, Kris Smith.

But with Kris spotted stepping out with a possible new love interest in recent weeks, it looks like Dannii could be wide open to take on the challenge. Plus let’s be honest, sex kitten Dannii sizzling with a hunk of a dancer is one sure fire way to get Kris’s attention back on the Aussie star…

Also rumoured to be joining the show is Westlife singer Nicky Byrne. The guys completed their final concerts as a group earlier this year before bowing out of the boy band market - so if true, Strictly could be the perfect new role for blonde Nicky to get his teeth stuck into.

Former This Morning host Fern Britton could also be making her big return to TV too, if she signs up to Strictly, as she’s rumoured to be considering the opportunity.

We think the 55-year-old blonde presenter would be a natural and would no doubt go down a storm with the audiences at home who would love her bubbly personality and mischievous streak.

Cricket legend Michael Vaughan is also tipped to, ahem, bowl audiences over. Whisperings are rife that he's getting prepared to strap on his dance shoes and throw some serious moves on the dance-floor.

The 2005 Ashes-winning skipper would be just the latest sportsman to shake his thing on Strictly, following on from the likes of Darren Gough, Mark Ramprakash and Robbie Savage.

Broadcaster and funnyman Chris Evans might also be getting ready sashay in sequins if the stories that he’s to compete on this year’s show are more than just pure rumour, as well as Olympic gymnast Beth Tweddle, who recently led Team GB women's gymnastics squad to sixth place in the team event at the Games.

Other celebrities being linked to the show include EastEnders actors Charlie Brooks and Sid Owen, aka married soap siblings Janine and Ricky Butcher.

Noel Gallagher was reportedly approached by the Beeb to take part in Strictly, but sadly had to turn it down. He told The Sun: “I'd have done it an' all... Sadly though, I'm a bit busy. Maybe next time ..."

Even Britain’s Got Talent winner Ashleigh Butler (of Ashleigh and Pudsey) was said to have been approached for the new series of Strictly.

But only time will tell who will and who won’t be amazing us all with their fancy footwork on the show!
