Lip Service Fan Event: exclusive chat with Heather Peace and Harriet Braun

Fans queued for hours outside the GFT on Sunday July 15, in anticipation of the Lip Service Fan Event, which was taking place in Glasgow – where the hit drama is set.

We were lucky enough to grab a quick chat with show creator and executive producer Harriet Braun, plus two of the stars of the series, Heather Peace and James Anthony Pearson, to find out what the special event meant to them.

There was a real excitement in the air as the show clearly holds a special place in the hearts of fans, and Harriet and the cast are well aware and grateful for the incredible support they have received, since the first series hit the air on BBC3 on 2010.

Speaking of why she chose to set the show in Glasgow, Harriet said: “I knew Glasgow really well cause my friends live here and it just made sense. It’s got a thriving gay scene.” That was apparent at the Fan Event, which took place the day after Glasgow Pride. Despite more than the odd hangover lingering amongst the crowds, the fans were ready to soak up all the day had to offer.

Heather is also a big fan of life north of the border, as she is currently staying in the city while she shoots Waterloo Road.

The stunning actress / singer said: “I love the city, I do. I feel like I’ve been adopted.”

So why has Lip Service struck a chord with so many viewers?

One lovely lady told us: “It’s very important, especially as there’s not much out there for lesbians to relate to.”

Another couple, who actually met on the Lip Service set when they were extras and are now engaged, added that although they love US lesbian drama The L Word, Lip Service, seems more real.

Harriet admitted she takes fans’ comments on board, especially via social networking sites.

She said: “Some people love some things, but I think if you read a lot you can get an overview and that does feed into what I’m thinking.”

James, who plays Ed, was also delighted with the feedback he has received from fans and he admitted Lip Service has been the one show all his friends have enjoyed watching.

As Harriet, James and Heather rushed off to take part in the day’s activities, which culminated in a fantastic Dykes of Hazard part, we couldn’t leave without asking the question on everyone’s lips: will there be a third series? Find out what they said in the player above.

Stay tuned to stv.tv/entertainment in the coming weeks for more from the Lip Service Fan Event.
