Superstar winner: joy as Ben Forster lands role of Jesus

Ben Forster has been crowned the winner of Superstar after a nail-biting final episode of the show, which saw Roger Wright come third and Rory Taylor second.

The talented 31-year-old will now go on to play Jesus in Andrew Lloyd Webber’s forthcoming arena tour of Jesus Christ Superstar. Hallelujah!

Clearly overjoyed to have been blessed with the part, Ben said: "I can not believe it - I did not expect this to happen, If you come and see us I will do you so proud."

Struggling to hold back his tears of joy, he added: "I can't wait to start working with Mel and Andrew." It was totes emosh, as Jason would say.

Tonight we saw the rock god perform Queen hit Who Wants To Love Forever, to rave reviews from Andrew’s disciples – the esteemed judging panel.

Despite a slight issue with timing at the start, Jason Donovan gushed: “There was that slight little hitch at the start of the song but you recovered absolutely beautifully tonight. Every night you go up a notch and I’m waiting for these cracks to appear and they never do. You are the benchmark, you are a superstar full stop.”

Mel C, who has been a massive fan of Ben throughout the series, said: “These things happen and over the last two weeks, I know you’ve been brilliant. You give 110 per cent every night. You have been so strong and that blip at the beginning, don’t beat yourself up. You’ve been brilliant since day one and I’ve never ever expected you to deliver some of those experiences you’ve given us. It’s utterly astounding.”

Dawn French said: “That was electric Ben. You are the real deal. You always tell the story Ben and this is the greatest story every told. When there was a whole gang of you at the beginning I didn’t notice you. You demand my attention now and you have buckets of my respect.”

And the good Lord praised Ben, as he told him: “I saw what happened, you then took over and it was mesmerising. You should be on a show called 'I’ve got divinity' get me out of here!”

Ben and his fellow finalists then went on to give a spine tingling performance of Jesus Christ Superstar’s Gethsemane – one of the most difficult songs to perform of any musical. Although they all impressed, Ben’s rock credentials stood out when he hit the high notes.

Ben has shone throughout the competition and tonight was the icing on the cake for the talented heartthrob, who very nearly gave up on his musical dream. Thanks heavens he reconsidered!

The 31-year-old was praying Superstar would finally be his big break, after he was rejected from X Factor Bootcamp back in 2009. How did you let that one slip through the net, eh Cowell?

Last week Ben’s performances wowed the judges and viewers. On Monday night he unleashed his cheeky side with his version of Plan B’s She Said and the judges loved his take on the hit, with Lord Webber telling him that he was going to go a long way in the competition.

On Tuesday, he once again impressed with a rendition of REM hit, Everybody Hurts, which almost reduced Mel C (and us) to tears.

Next, he gave a rousing performance of Maroon 5’s upbeat track This Love and the judges were particularly impressed with how he handled the performance, despite a last minute production change during the day.

And on Thursday he opted for a stripped back 80s anthem Fast Car by Tracy Chapman.

Following that, Ben gave a spine-tingling performance of Cold As Ice by Foreigner, which was dubbed “amazing” by Melanie C.

Jason Donovan said: “The standard of this competition is off the scale,  that was intelligent, articulated, you give 100 per cent, you could win this competition.”

On Monday night, he sang power ballad It Must Have Been Love by Roxette, which saw Mel tell him: “You’re an absolute sweetheart and for me right now you are my Jesus.”

And in the semi-final, his version of Snow Patrol’s Run saw guest performer Katherine Jenkins admit she would like to take Ben home. We think he’ll be a little busy for play dates now Katherine...

We can’t wait to see Ben in all his rock god glory when he takes to the stage to play Jesus in Jesus Christ Superstar the Musical. What a divine show.
