Coronation Street's pregnancy plot is 'emotional' says North

Coronation Street actor Mikey North says his alter-ego Gary Windass is happy he is going to be a father.

Gary's girlfriend Izzy Armstrong (Cherylee Houston) is expecting a baby but they are both left shattered after she suffers a miscarriage.

After the loss of their baby Gary tries to assure Izzy that their dream of being parents is not over, but the factory worker announces she does not want to try for another child.

Discussing how Gary reacts to the pregnancy, Mikey told Digital Spy: "I think at first it took him by surprise, because it kind of came from nowhere.

"But now he's come round to it and he's the happiest guy alive - he can't wait to be a dad. Gary and Izzy's hearts are set on having a baby now."

Following the miscarriage North says Gary is devastated but tries to stay strong for Izzy.

He said: "Gary tries to put on a brave face for Izzy, so that she doesn't feel worse than she already does.

"He's very upset himself, but he does try to look after Izzy and convince her that everything is going to be fine."

However, Gary receives a double blow when Izzys says she does not want to try for another baby.

North said: "Well, Gary is overeager to try again for another baby as soon as possible. People with Izzy's condition can carry babies to full-term, but it just so happens that she miscarried on this occasion.

"But Izzy is not so keen on the idea. She eventually decides that she can't face going through it again, as she doesn't want the pain of carrying a baby full-term with her condition.

"Izzy tells Gary that she's not going to try for another baby and that's the most upsetting thing for Gary - that he's never going to be a dad. He tries desperately to persuade Izzy otherwise."
