Coronation Street's Shobna Gulati has spoken about having to quit twitter after receiving abusive tweets.
The actress, who plays barmaid Sunita Alahan in the Weatherfield drama, decided to closer her twitter account after she received "violent, vitriolic" racist abuse.
Gulati told the Daily Star: "People even judge me for saying what the tweets said. It feels like people now criticise you for anything and everything.
"But I've taken control so if they feel they've won then that's fine."
Shobna decided to quit the social networking site after she received mutilated pictures with captions and offensive messages from users.
She said: "I don't want it on my computer screen.
"Right now I just want to concentrate on my job and getting myself feeling better."
The actress admitted that she had not yet gone to the police as she doesn't know if they will be able to catch those responsible.
She said: "It's really difficult to track people down and the police know that. But the fact is it was pretty hideous stuff.
"Getting that kind of abuse is not easy... It was really personal. I'm a woman on my own. I don't want to read that stuff. It makes you feel insecure and frightened."
However, Gulati admitted: "I miss the banter and keeping up to date. It gave me access to people I'd never normally have access to [but] I think I had an ill-placed faith in human nature."
She added: "It's disgusting and I'm glad I've said I don't want to read it. You can have an opinion - if you don't like the look of me that's fine, but there's a way of saying it."
