Superstar: exclusive unseen auditions from the musical show

Superstar kicked off in style last night as Andrew Lloyd Webber, alongside his trusty team of casting maestro David Grindrod, former Spice Girl Mel C, and pop sensation Jason Donovan (who is not stranger to a biblical musical role himself – remember Joseph?) began their search for a rock god to appear in the Lord’s tour of Jesus Christ Superstar.

The first episode showed the lucky few who had been asked back for callbacks, but how did they perform during their first auditions, we hear you cry?

Well, fear not. By the power of the internet, we can bring you the audition videos in all their glory – hallelujah!

First up, we met 24 year old Rory Taylor from Liverpool, currently in a band called 54321. He performed Paul McCartney’s Maybe I’m Amazed, leading Andrew to compare him to Rod Stewart and Mel to compare him to Orlando Bloom. We see what he means! Watch him appropriately sing Roxanne at his first audition.

Next up was plucky builder Steve Pipe, whose lack of acting experience threatened to de-rail his rendition of ACDC’s Shook Me All Night Long.

Jason told him it was a “car crash” audition and it looked like it was the end of the line for the cheery builder, but the judges put their faith in him one last time and gave him a second chance.

Watch him show off his vocals with a powerful cover of AC/DC hit
Highway to Hell.

Someone else praying for a second chance was Jonathan Ansell who you might recognise from the X Factor and classical group G4. He was the cute blonde one. He sang Queen’s Somebody To Love and Andrew was clearly impressed, calling it a “stunning audition.”

However Jonathon’s dreams of playing Jesus now hang in the balance as it emerged that he is under contract with another production, meaning he wouldn’t be able to take part in the later stages of the competition.

The tearful singer begged the panel to let him continue but David told him they could give him neither a yes nor a no and would need to seek advice first.

Poor Jonathan. Watch him hit a heavenly note during his first audition, with a rendition of Heart’s You’re The Voice.

25 year old Sam Cassidy, currently working at Abercrombie & Fitch (the shop where you have to be a little bit beautiful to even get an interview no less)vowed not “to be the second choice boy anymore.” However his performance of Paul McCartney and Wing’s Live & Let Die failed to ignite the judges and he only just scraped through to the next round, despite Mel C’s strong objections.

Scotland’s Ross Wild distinguished himself from the masses with his ability to effortlessly hit the high notes in the famous Gethsemane. Many contenders failed spectacularly to hit this note but the Aberdonian wowed the judges with The Show Must Go On by Queen. Afterwards Melanie commented “The girls are going to love him.”

He’s Scot a lot of talent – go Wild for Ross’ performance here

Someone who wasn’t such a high flyer was Matthew Casson from Liverpool. The legal eagle’s rendition of Blaze of Glory might have been passionate but it didn’t hit the spot with the judging panel. Neither did Matthew’s vision of a modern day Jesus working in the media! Watch his version of Kings of Leon hit Sex on Fire here.

There was heartbreak for some as four singers in from The Rock Tenors auditioned separately but only three made it through to the next round. One of these was Nathan James, a rocker at heart who impressed the judges with his unique rock version of Show Me Heaven by Maria McKee.

Melanie likened him to “Joss Stone with a beard”, while Jason thought he looked like Justin Lee Collins! What do you think? Watch Nathan rock his first audition.

The final contender on stage was David Hunter, 24 years old from Warrington. The former band member of Reemer used to support McFly and Scouting for Girls, but after the band split David decided to try his luck in the Superstar auditions.

His mesmerising performance of Awaiting You by Myths and Hymns was worth waiting for and left the judges speechless and David with a ticket to Superstar Island. Take a sneak peek at his unique performance of Journey hit Faithfully here.

There are even more exclusive auditions at stv.tv/superstar now and after tonight’s show, we will have some extra special performances for you to enjoy. Hallelujah!
