X Factor boss Simon Cowell has made an X-rated admission - revealing he’s been putting pretty girls through to the next round of the competition based on their looks rather than singing ability.

The music mogul, who has made his name as a notoriously tough judge on the show, must be softening in his more mature years, after becoming known for immediately axing anyone who didn't come up to scratch.

But it looks like his policy has, on this occasion, been thrown out the window. Speaking to The Sun, he said: "If you are single, you can flirt.

"We've definitely put girls through because they are cute, in the same way the girls put guys through – it's just the way of the world."

Cowell is a well-known flirt, and is rumoured to have enjoyed a fling with former X Factor co-star Dannii Minogue, as well as having his head turned by new X Factor USA judge. Britney Spears.

And the 52-year-old admitted he has no qualms about mixing business with pleasure, joking that meeting stunning ladies is one of the reasons he picked this career.

"I've been a naughty boy – that's why I got into the music business. I've had my fair share, nothing too bad,” the star said.

Speaking about being a world-famous star, Cowell added: “I’m immensely flattered because it means people watch the shows. Without the shows being popular, no one would know who I am!”

The X Factor UK auditions have just concluded and the judges are now getting ready to work on the Bootcamp stage of the competition.

The show will return to TV later this summer, with new judge Nicole Scherzinger taking her place on the panel alongside Gary Barlow, Louis Walsh and Tulisa Contostavlos.

Simon meanwhile returns to X Factor USA later this year alongside existing judge L.A. Reid and newbies Britney and Disney darling Demi Lovato.
