EastEnders has lifted the coveted Best British Soap gong at this year’s British Soap Awards.

The cast and crew from EastEnders were clearly delighted with the win, rushing up on stage to collect their trophy from Rupert Everett.

Shane Richie who accepted the award on behalf of the EastEnders cast and crew, said: “Hopefully this is going to be the first of many…we’ve got some wonderful stories coming up and thank you to everyone at home, we understand that this is a viewers’ vote [award]. Thank you to everyone at home who voted. God bless, thank you so much.”

EastEnders also won the coveted trophy at last year’s glitzy British Soap Awards too, making this year’s victory all the sweeter.

It’s been a dramatic year on EastEnders, with some of the best storylines including Pat Butcher’s emotional death and Tanya’s battle with cervical cancer.

As well as winning the Best British Soap gong, EastEnders also picked up the awards for Sexiest Male (Scott Maslen), Best Young Performance (Lorna Fitzgerald), Best on-screen Partnership (Jo Joyner and Jake Wood), and Best Dramatic Performance (Jo Joyner).

Pam St Clement, who played Pat Butcher for 25 years, also lifted the lifetime achievement award.
