Five Minute Theatre - how it all began

In 2011, the National Theatre of Scotland celebrated its fifth birthday. For an organisation that has set out to be different from every other national theatre - no building, working at large and small scale, in communities and on main stages - no ordinary celebration would do. And so the idea of Five Minute Theatre was born, an invitation to everyone, far and wide, to submit ideas for a piece of theatre that was just five minutes long.

Just about the only stipulation was that it had to be performed in front of a live audience (though it could be recorded) but otherwise it was open, a bit like NTS shows, to everyone, amateur, professional, at home and abroad. And then they really went for it by streaming them all, live, as they happened, on the web for 24 hours on midsummer night.

That's when STV got involved; it seemed such a crazy idea but we wanted to help. And we did, streaming it on our own site as well and making all the videos available later right here. So have a look; we've loosely divided them into categories but frankly it's pot luck. Some are, definitely, better than others. But somehow, that's not really the point; just dive in and enjoy.
