Veteran actor Sir Derek Jacobi is set to make his debut on Coronation Street.
Sir Derek, who recently starred in The King’s Speech and My Weekend with Marilyn, has landed a walk-on part in the soap and will appear in the background at the Rovers Return.
The production staff on set are delighted to have Sir Derek on set and said: “We have tried for years to sort out a role for him but we have never quite managed it.
“We are as big a fan of his work as he is of ours. He is an Equity member, so there was no problem getting him on set.
“It is highly unlikely that viewers would spot him but we hope it made his day.”
Sir Derek, who founded the Royal Shakespeare Company, has been a huge Corrie fan for many years, and he revealed how he once tried to get Bradley Walsh to sneak him on set.
“I have always wanted to be in Coronation Street, but nobody’s ever asked me,” he said.
“So, one night I had dinner with Bradley and we both got horribly drunk. I told him how much a part in the Street would mean to me and we hatched a plan.”
