Dancing On Ice 2012 final: Matthew Wolfenden crowned winner

Matthew Wolfenden was crowned Dancing On Ice 2012 champion tonight, after an extremely tense final which saw the Emmerdale hunk battle against runner-up Jorgie Porter.

Matthew managed to secure the ice trophy after going head-to-head with Jorgie, who put up an extremely impressive fight.

But in the end, Matthew had the extra edge over the blonde beauty, securing his victory. Earlier in the night, former X Factor hopeful Chico Slimani placed third following the result of the audience vote.

Clearly ecstatic with his win, Matthew told host Phillip Schofield: “Emm, it's going to take a few days to sink in I can’t believe it, I’m shaking.”

And Matthew even admitted that he never thought he had any chance of winning  the show. “Absolutely not," he said. "The first time I stepped on the ice I thought I’d made the biggest mistake of my life and my career!"

Matthew’s win was announced just after the actor and fellow finalist, Hollyoaks stunner Jorgie had both skated their versions of the iconic ice dance the Bolero, which they helped choreograph. The ice dance was made famous by Olympic skaters Jane Torvill and Christopher Dean, who performed it at the 1984 Olympics.

Earlier in the night, they had both also performed two other routines – Jorgie performing an ice dance to Fame, which she scored 29 points out of 30 for, and Matthew skating to Singin’ In The Rain, landing him a top score of 30.

Both then selected their favourite routines from the 2012 series of Dancing On Ice, with Matthew picking his week eight routine to Don’t Stop Me Now, which he had originally scored 26 points for. This time he improved on that, landing 28.5 – 9.5 from each of the judges.

Jorgie selected her week six routine to Alica Keys’ hit Fallin’, which she originally scored 26 for; this time she got top marks of 30 out of 30.

The judges were on hand to give their verdicts on the finalists’ performances as well as scores, but the decision of who placed first, second and third was entirely down to the public vote.

And they decided that their 2012 Dancing On Ice champion was Matthew.

Looking back on his performances on this year’s show, the actor has many moments to be proud of, including his stunning first skate on week two of the show which saw the actor land the highest opening mark on DOI 2012.

Other highlights included Matthew’s stunning week 10 performance, when he and Nina performed an eye-popping circus-themed routine which saw the judges go Wild – and the couple topping the leaderboard once again. Now he can add his stunning routines from the DOI final to his list of achievements.

Matthew joins previous winners, including predecessor Sam Attwater who won Dancing On Ice 2011, Hayley Tamaddon, Suzanne Shaw, Kyran Bracken, Gaynor Faye and Ray Quinn.
