Dancing On Ice: Cousins says Matthew Wolfenden exudes winner potential

Matthew Wolfenden has the potential to become the winner of Dancing on Ice 2012, according to head judge Robin Cousins, who gave the actor glowing praise following last night’s semi-final.

Speaking about the Ultimate Skills Challenge section on last night’s show, performed by each of the final four  – Matthew, Chico Slimani, Jennifer Ellison and Jorgie Porter – head judge Robin Cousins said: “Ultimate Skills was good, they all remembered what they were doing, they all stayed within their own pace.

”Jen did a nice job, kept it together and Jorgie was really strong. But for me it came down to the two boys.

”Chico had a lot more speed, great control, great effort, but Matthew just had a quality about him on his own that exuded winner.”

The judge added: “It has to be an interesting final, it can’t be anything else.”

Matthew might have impressed Robin in the Ultimate Skills portion of the night, but it was Chico who secured the highest marks in the paired dance section of the semi-final, landing a score of 28.5, with both Jorgie and Matthew picking up 27.5 and Jennifer scoring 24.

And Robin said the former X Factor contestant was wholly deserving of securing the highest mark for that performance.

“Chico was brilliant, he came out all guys blazing, very, very strong,” Robin explained.

“What works for him now is that he’s a very strong partner, it’s not just about his own skating skills but the partnering skills are brilliant, so I wasn’t surprised that Chico delivered the best paired performance tonight, and be at the top of the leader-board, deservedly.”

In the end though Matthew had the most overall points – 56 compared to Chico’s 55, Jorgie’s 54.5 and Jennifer’s 47.5 – which automatically secured him a place in next weekend’s grand final.

Chico made it through following the public vote, leaving Jennifer and Jorgie to battle it out in the skate-off, with Jorgie winning the vote of all three judges, Robin, Louie Spence and Katarina Witt.

Robin admitted that last night’s semi-final was “very good” but warned that next weekend the final three – Chico, Matthew and Jorgie – will need to up their game if they want to walk away with the trophy.

“Chico was the only one without a mistake [tonight]. You don’t want to make mistakes but they’re being pushed to their limits choreographically, they want to deliver great performances  but I think next week is going to have go be perfect if you want to walk away with that championship and that dancing on ice trophy.”

Ooh, we can't wait for the Dancing On Ice grand final!
