One Direction star Harry Styles has insisted that his relationship with Xtra Factor host Caroline Flack was a serious romance.
The 18-year-old claimed it was not his management but the group's female fans that brought the relationship to an end.
Insiders have said that Harry was devastated by the break-up and that the 15-year age gap had nothing to do with the split.
Harry said: "Other people didn't want it to work, in the end we decided to give up on it."
He added: "We will remain friends."
A source told The People "It really was a serious relationship. But in the end it wasn't worth the hassle."
Although they never officially confirmed they were an item Styles took to twitter earlier this month to defend Caroline.
He tweeted: "Please know I didn't `dump' Caroline. This was a mutual decision. She is one of the kindest, sweetest people I know."
