Kate Middleton attended her first solo public engagement on Wednesday night.
The Duchess of Cambridge looked confident as she undertook a visit without her husband Prince William.
She attended the National Portrait Gallery, of which she is a patron, for a preview of the Lucian Freud show.
St James's Palace also confirmed that Catherine has agreed to a request from the Gallery to pose for a portrait.
A Palace spokesman is quoted by the Daily Mirror saying: "The Duchess is happy to do it some time in the future.
"There haven't been any decisions about who the artist will be, this is being discussed."
For the event the Duchess chose to wear a Jesire, double-breasted, 1950's style grey coat dress.
Arriving at the gallery she mingled with Lord of the Rings actor Sir Ian Holm, photographer Mary McCartney, and Andrew Parker Bowles, the Duchess of Cornwall's ex-husband, whose portrait was painted by Freud and is part of the exhibition.
