Former Coronation Street star Katherine Kelly has been dazzling critics with her superb performance in “She Stoops to Conquer” at the National Theatre.
The actress, who played Becky McDonald in Corrie for six years, has taken on the role of Kate Hardcastle in the 18th century comedy play, and her performance has been going down a storm.
Libby Purves of The Times newspaper praised Katherine, saying that Corrie fans are in for a treat, while Charles Spencer wrote in The Daily Telegraph that she “brings superb assurance to the role” and described her as “brimming with mischief”.
Critic Michael Billington wrote in The Guardian newspaper: “As the well-born Kate Hardcastle she is obliged, somewhat ironically in view of her role in Corrie, to pose as a barmaid, but even she gets legitimate laughs by her hip-twitching gait and air of sexual mischief.”
Katherine left the soap earlier this year after six years playing bolshy barmaid Becky. Fans of the show saw Becky get her revenge on twisted Tracy Barlow before jetting off to Barbados for a new life in the sun with her boyfriend Danny.
The actress won a National Television Award last month in the Best Serial Drama Performance category.
