John and Moira Barton have been struggling to get their relationship back on track after Moira’s ill advised affair with village lothario Cain Dingle, but just when it looks like their troubled marriage will survive, tragedy strikes...
Things are looking bad for Moira when John asks her for a divorce later this month, but when she reluctantly agrees, her husband realises that he can’t live without her and tells her that he doesn't want a divorce after all. Aww, how sweet!
Speaking to All About Soap magazine, James Thornton, who plays John, revealed: "It's the finality [of the divorce] that makes John realise it's not what he wants. It changes his mind and at that moment they decide to start rebuilding their relationship."
As news of the pair’s reunion spreads throughout the village, Adam is delighted that his parents have gotten back together and suggests that they leave the village for the night to spend some time alone together.
Setting off in Andy’s Land Rover, the happy couple reminisce about their relationship, looking forward to their night away, but suddenly John skids on a patch of ice on the road and the car tears through the crash barriers and lands on its side.
As John and Moira lay trapped in the Land Rover, the car slips again, leaving them dangerously close to the edge of a steep ravine. Oh no!
The terrified pair are trying to work out how to escape when they are spotted by Declan and Katie, who rush over and try to help them, but things turn into a nightmare when the Land Rover slips, leaving Katie and Declan watching in horror as the car plummets down the edge of the ravine.
James is set to bow out of the soap this month, so does this mean that John dies in the horror smash, or will he and Moira get out alive? James told All About Soap: "I have decided to leave on a high with a really big exit storyline, which I'm very excited about. There's a lot more to come!"
