Matt Smith wants a male companion when Karen Gillan departs 'Doctor Who'.
The 29-year-old actor - who bagged the Male Drama Performance gong at Wednesday's National Television Awards for his role as the Time Lord in the sci-fi series - admitted while he always thought he and Karen would have "different journeys" in the show, he won't be following in her footsteps and leaving anytime soon.
He told BANG Showbiz: "I'm really pleased with the award. We always try to do the best every day and try to improve the show as best we can.
"I wouldn't mind a male companion now that Karen has left. I've always believe me and Karen would have different journeys in 'Doctor Who'.
"I'm sad she's left, but the show is bigger than all the actors who have been in it. I have no plans to leave, though. I've definitely got a year left in the show and I'll take it from there."
Meanwhile, Scottish actress Karen - who took home the NTA for Female Drama Performance for her role as the Doctor's companion Amy Pond - explained while her part in 'Doctor Who' has come to a "natural end", the show will always be a "massive part" of her life.
Speaking at Wednesday NTAs at London's O2 Arena, she said: "I'm still shaking, I really can't believe this. It's such an honour. I'm going to phone my mum ASAP. It's great that its happened on Burns Night, too! "A huge part of me is so sad to be leaving but it's a natural end for me. 'Doctor Who' will always be a massive part of my life."
