National Television Awards: Katherine Kelly wins best Serial Drama Performance What a fitting end to Katherine Kelly’s time on Coronation Street: the actress has just won the gong for best Serial Drama Performance at the National Television Awards, for her role as brash but brilliant Becky McDonald.

Katherine bowed out of the cobbles on Monday night, as Becky fled to Barbados to start a new life with boyfriend Danny.

Tonight, Katherine was unable to attend the NTAs, as she is currently starring in a production of She Stoops To Conquer, but she sent her close friends and Corrie co-stars Ryan Thomas and Paula Lane to collect the award.

Paula read out an extra special message from the star, saying:” Hooray! What a wonderful week it’s been for Becky as Becky goes to Barbados and I get an NTA…

“I wish I could give each and everyone who voted for me a power hug Becky style.

“Thank you for loving her as much as I have, I will never forget it.”

The star then went on to give a special message to Corrie, adding: “Thank you to everyone at ITV, particularly team Coronation Street,” to which there was a massive cheer.

Katherine Kelly became a Corrie icon in her six years on the soap and last night show bosses paid tribute to Becky in a moving one-off special entitled Farewell Becky.

You can watch Katherine’s first audition for the part of Becky in the video player above.

Will there be more celebrations for Corrie tonight? The soap will battle it out with EastEnders, Emmerdale and Hollyoaks for the coveted title of best Serial Drama.
