Coronation Street said goodbye to Katherine Kelly last night as her soap character, Becky McDonald, jetted off to Barbados for a new life with boyfriend Danny.
Becky had become one of the show’s most popular characters and has come a long way since her first appearance in the soap, as a homeless person six years ago.
Speaking about her first audition, Katherine revealed: “It all happened on the South Bank at ITV when Gennie Radcliffe called me in for an audition for the part of Becky. She didn’t even have a surname at that point.
“I was told she’s homeless, so no make-up allowed, and she’s a villain.”
Casting director Gennie was extremely impressed with Katherine’s audition, which lifted the character of Becky right off the page and brought the tart-with-a-heart to life. She explained:“With Becky’s trademark charming gutsy vulnerability, I pretty much knew that we had her.”
Becky has endured many highs and lows during her six years on the cobbles, and her time on the show has certainly been 'a journey'. Viewers have seen bolshy Becky transformed from a thieving ex con into a vulnerable, loveable, woman.
From her drunken rampages and arguments with Tracy Barlow, to her rollercoaster relationship with husband Steve McDonald, Becky has been described as a Coronation Street icon and will be sorely missed by viewers.
Katherine is up for Best Serial Drama performance at the National Television Awards, which will be shown on STV tomorrow night (Wednesday) at 7.30pm.
A special one-off programme, Farewell Becky, will be shown on STV tonight at 7.30pm and will feature interviews with Corrie favourites including Julie Hesmondhalgh, Simon Gregson and Kate Ford.
