Last night temperatures dropped around the country, but at the Dancing on Ice studio things were hotting up, as the competition sparked into action and the boys came back fighting.
Week one saw Jorgie Porter and Matt Evers top the leader board with a breathtaking skate to Skinny Love. They scored an impressive 18.5 and head judge Robin Cousins said: “That was one of the strongest opening routines we have had on any series of Dancing On Ice...it was a breathtaking duet."
Could anyone top that? Apparently so…
The night kicked off in style as pop princess Pixie Lott performed new single Kiss The Stars, while the skating professionals took to the ice.
First celeb to skate was Jennifer Ellison, with everybody’s favourite pro Daniel Whiston. Viewers had high hopes for Jen, as she has a dance background and has certainly proved she’s in shape for the show.
Dressed in a striking red outfit, complete with matching berry lips, the former Brookie babe performed beautifully to Bei Mir Bist Du Schon (Puppini Sisters) and scored 15.5 out of 30.
Louie Spence gushed: “It was beautifully choreographed, you have wonderful extensions and to do that on the ice it looked breath taking. For me there was a bit of tension through the shoulders.”
Robin Cousins added: “That was such a lovely natural performance. There was this strong personality and the choreography was beautiful executed. It will be fantastic to watch you grow.”
From elegance to, well, someone who gave it his all - Sam Nixon skated with Alexandra Schauman to Fascination (Alphabeat) and also scored 15.5 out of 30, beating TV partner Mark Rhodes, who last week scored just 8 points!
Robin said: “I don’t know who that person was on the VT but I’m glad it was a different person tonight, this is really, really good and you are looking good.
Katarina Witt told the children’s TV favourite: “I know you said there isn’t much competition between you and Mark, but you are so much faster. I was really impressed with the step sequence.”
Queen of fitness Rosemary Conley was up next and she looked pretty as a picture in pink.
Skating with Mark Hanretty to Fernando (ABBA), Rosemary scored 12.5 out of 30
Louie said: “As you said I am looking for performance. I’m glad you did that little trip because as soon as you did you broke out into a beautiful smile, before that I could feel the fear and I could feel the tension in your body. Saying that you do have nice lines, when you were lifted that was beautiful.
Katarina had nothing but praise for the fabulously fit 65 year old, telling her: “Well Rosemary all those words work for you, amazing, charming, beautiful, wonderful but mostly I think you are an inspiration for us.”
Laila Morse, 66, was also out to prove older girls have still got it, but the EastEnders star wasn’t quite as agile as her fellow over 60.
Dancing to My Guy, Laila, who injured her shoulder during rehearsals, was awarded 9.5 points.
Robin said: “You made it through unscathed, and I wouldn’t have known you were in pain if I hadn’t seen the VT. It was basic but it was controlled.”
Louie added: “At the beginning it was singing by numbers and when you got moving I enjoyed it more. In the lifts the lines were not bad at all. Overall considering your injury it wasn’t a bad performance.”
Next up, it was golden free-running god Sebastien Foucan – and boy did he shine just as much as his dazzling outfit.
The French star skated with Brianne Delcourt to Clocks (Coldplay) and scored 17.5 out of 30
Katarina said: “Well Sebastien for me I hope you keep experimenting. Keep trying as there will be more interesting things that will come out of it. I am impressed with the steps, the speed and the strength you have.”
Louie loved the action packed performance, saying: “You do have a dancing ability you remind me of Chemmy last week, you had the same kind of aggression and speed. I enjoyed the choreography, there was some kind of separation there it made it contemporary and I enjoyed that. I like the way you did the rolls on the ice and as you came back together it blended beautifully, but it’s about the performance as well.”
Then it was Chico time! The former X Factor favourite proved a star on ice, equalling Jorgie’s impressive score of 18.5 out of 30.
Robin told the 40 year old: “It had speed and great power and every move was controlled and in the right place at the right time, I just thought it was terrific.”
Katarina said: “I know you said you feel like a horse who wants to finish the race, Chico you have potential to be a thoroughbred.”
Louie was (practically) lost for words. Composing himself, he said: “Chico it is getting hot in here, that ice was melting. Not only are you easy on the eye physically but you knocked out a great routine. At first it was a bit too much cheesy Chico for me and I wanted it to be a bit more sexy, but overall I’m excited.”
Hollywood star Corey Feldman was up next and he skated with Brooke Castile to Summer of 69. Sadly, not even the eight Playboy bunnies in the audience could help Corey play it cool on ice and the actor scored just 11 out of 30.
Robin said he “plodded” rather than glided, while Katarina told him: “Corey to me you are working so hard and trying so hard, its hard for me to critise you, when I watch you it looks like you are walking on raw eggs.” We’re not sure what that meant but it doesn’t sound like a compliment!
Last but not least, it was Emmerdale hunk Matthew Wolfenden’s turn to skate.
Dressed in a tight-fitting leather outfit, the 30 year old scored 20.5 out of 30 and certainly captured the hearts of the audience… and Katarina!
Awarding him seven points, the judge said: “I gave the seven for the all right reasons, your skating, definately not for how sexy you are, how great your body looked, it was about the steps! I admit, I am a women, get rid of the leather get into jeans and a white shirt and you will be even hotter.”
Louis added: “It was an explosive performance, it was nearly perfect. When the music built you also built, it’s just getting too hot!”
Although they gave it their all, it was Laila and Corey who ended up in the skate-off and the judges unanimously decided it was time for Ms Morse to skate back to the Queen Vic.
Next Sunday, all of the stars will take to the ice to battle it out for their place on the show. Who will slip up and follow in Laila’s shaky footsteps? We’ll find out on Sunday at 6.10 on STV.
