The British Wrestling Championships are taking place in Kilmarnock, Scotland tomorrow (May 27) and legendary wrestler Kevin ‘Big Sexy’ Nash will be making a special appearance.
The 6’10 superstar was a founding member of professional wrestling stable nWo with Hulk Hogan and Scott Hall, which was one of the sport’s most influential forces in the late 90s.
Kevin spoke to The Hour about the phenomenal sport, and he thinks that its appeal to children is what has made it so popular. He said:
“I think as society slowly crumbles people look for heroes, and we kind of produce them. It’s the type of market that if you grab the children then mum and dad have to bring them.”
All of the matches in professional wrestling are for entertainment purposes and have a predetermined outcome to add to the entertainment value, and Kevin admits that not all of the wrestlers get on with each other backstage. He said:
“At the workplace most people try to be courteous but some people just don’t mesh, and there’s a lot of times where you get your best television [from that]. There’s a couple of guys in the locker room just now who aren’t fond of each other.”
Kevin used to play basketball professionally and also served in the US army for two years. Known as 'Big Sexy' to his wrestling fans, he is now in his 50s and is currently on a legends contract with WWE, Inc, which means he no longer works full-time.
However, he still trains four times a week to keep himself fit. He does a combination of weight training and cardio work and eats a lot of carbohydrates to keep his body burning fat for energy.
The star is also an established actor and has appeared in several films including The Longest Yard, The Punisher and DOA: Dead or Alive. He has also made appearances in television shows Sabrina the Teenage Witch and The New Love Boat, has hosted VH1’s The List and has been a guest on talk shows Jimmy Kimmel and The Tonight Show.
