Cheers: Michelle and Stephen are getting festive

STV has today announced that its festive Hogmanay line-up is a cracker. There will be a sparkling mix of comedy and entertainment to see in the New Year with a bang.

STV’s Hogmanay celebrations will kick off at 8pm with Postcode Challenge Hogmanay Special, presented by dapper quiz master Angus Purden.

In this hour-long special, teams of top comedians will battle it out for a chance to win the £25,000 jackpot for charity.

In one corner, playing for Alzheimer Scotland, stand-up comedian and TV presenter Craig Hill puts his general knowledge to the test with his wise-cracking team mates; comedienne Ava Vidal, stand-up Sean Grant, and comedian and Take the High Road star Andy Cameron.

They will compete against Glaswegian comedian and presenter Des McLean and his witty team, playing for Cash for Kids; Hi-De-Hi star Ruth Madoc, stand-up John Moloney, and actress, comedienne and writer, Janey Godley.

The next lot of belly laughs comes from STV’s original new sketch show, /Comedy (Forward Slash Comedy) a series of sketches penned and performed by some of Scotland’s most exciting new and established comedy talent.

This comedy project was launched a nationwide search for budding comedy writers. Nearly 50 successful sketches were produced, and in the run-up to the festive period at least one new video is released on stv.tv/comedy every day.

The sketches with the highest ratings will be put together for the Hogmanay television special.

As 2010 draws to an end, we join The Hour’s Stephen Jardine and Michelle McManus in a festive late-night special, Midnight.

The popular presenting team welcome celebrity guests to the STV studios, including Dorothy Paul and Darius Campbell, and bring in the New Year with chat, music, food and lots of fun.

Michelle McManus said: “Hogmanay is one of my favourite times of the year, and I'm delighted to be part of STV's celebrations.

“It's set to be a brilliant evening full of festive programmes and I’m looking forward to welcoming 2011 with a bang together with our viewers.”

STV will also show Scotland Revealed in Winter, a one-off documentary which celebrates the stunning transformation of Scotland when snow blankets the landscape, using stunning aerial HD footage. Geographer Vanessa Collingridge uncovers the country’s glacial and volcanic history.

Elizabeth Partyka, STV’s Channel Controller, said: “We have a fantastic, fun and festive Hogmanay schedule lined up on STV this year.

“Over the course of the night we’ll bring our viewers a great mix of comedy, entertainment and stunning scenery to see in the New Year, and I hope they’ll stay with us all the way to the Bells and beyond.”
