X Factor star James Arthur has admitted that life before he went on the show was bleak.
The 24-year-old is favourite with some bookies to be crowned the winner of the talent show this weekend.
However, he has revealed that last year things were very different and he was battling ‘anxiety and depression’.
James was living in a bedsit in Middlesbrough and playing in small pubs to try and earn a living.
He told Look magazine: “This time last year was the darkest point of my life.
“I cut myself off from everyone and I was in a bad place. I could see it all spiralling and I felt like I couldn’t go on like that.”
Arthur added: “I was diagnosed with anxiety and depression. I was really worried [because] I felt ready to give up on life. I didn’t want to jump off a building, but who knows how bad it could have got?”
This year things are looking good and even if he doesn’t win The X Factor he is likely to land a record deal.
He has won the support of established artists such as Emeli Sandé, Labrinth and Ed Sheeran.
