Couples rehearse professional dance moves for STV wedding show

Most couples hope their wedding goes off without a hitch, but few work with a professional choreographer to turn their first dance into an award-winning routine.

In new TV dance competition First Dance two Scottish couples did just that, with the added pressure of performing for a panel of judges and a prize of £10,000 prize. And if that wasn't enough, they had to rehearse the whole thing in secret.

For Aberdeen fisherman Matt Kinghorn it was a daunting challenge and no one thought this more than his beautiful bride Ellie.

Speaking to STV, she said: "It was quite shocking because Matt dances like a chicken, I have never really seen him dance properly when we were out. He can usually be quite embarrassing with his old man moves.”

Fortunately for the Kinghorns Matt had help from New York choreographer John Byrne, who has worked with artists like Lady Gaga, Elton John and Gwen Stefani.

And it seems to have paid off, because Matt and Ellie were soon doing something quite different from the traditional ballroom waltz.

Ellie added: "On the night, we got dressed up in burlesque-style outfits. Everyone was so shocked; their jaws nearly hit the floor. I was nervous but just relaxed into it and enjoyed the dance so much. It really was quite spectacular."

In Edinburgh, another couple who had been hard at work preparing for the show were primary school teacher Gemma Rose and her fiancé Darren Tunesi, who worked with choreographer Natricia Bernard. In the past she has worked with Kanye West, Katy Perry and Florence and the Machine, so wasn't going to let them have an easy time of it.

And with ten days of rehearsals, keeping the routine secret from their relatives proved almost as difficult as the dancing.

“It was crazy and physically exhausting,” said Gemma. “But I wouldn’t have changed anything about it.

“Looking back it was quite surreal, it was like we lived a secret life for ten days in order to keep what we were doing a complete surprise.”

Now, after all that hard work, they'll be judged by ballet maestro Wayne Sleep, Strictly Come Dancing’s Lilia Kopylova and top movie choreographer Paul Harris, but you’ll have to wait until tomorrow night to find out who won.
