X Factor boss Simon Cowell has revealed that he assumed that Cheryl Cole was suffering from a hangover when she first succumbed to malaria, says a report.

The 50-year-old entertainment mogul told a magazine that he initially was not concerned when Cheryl fell ill while filming The X Factor, as he believed that she had just drank too much the night before the auditions.

He told OK: "When she first fell ill we thought it was a hangover, she even said that to us. But, of course, it was far more serious than that."

Cowell joked that he first learned that Cheryl was on the road to recovery when he began to receive "grumpy" text messages from the Geordie lass.

He said: "When we got the all-clear and she started to text me, I knew she was on the mend.

"Then the texts got increasingly grumpy and I knew she was getting back to her old self."

Cheryl was infected with the deadly disease during a holiday to Tanzania with Derek Hough.
