One Direction have backed James Arthur to win this year’s X Factor.
The boyband gave their support to James during the first live show of the series.
Asked by host Dermot O’Leary who was the group’s favourite act, Louis Tomlinson replied: “We all absolutely love James Arthur. I think he's unbelievable.”
Harry Styles then agreed: “Yeah, James.”
Arthur performed Kelly Clarkson’s Stronger, with Louis Walsh saying: “We've found ourselves a brand new recording star.”
However, fellow judge Gary Barlow suggested that Arthur’s “edges are starting to be rounded off”, adding that he should “do it your own way”.
Arthur responded to the criticism saying: “You don't know what goes on behind the scenes, and I made that song my own.”
Meanwhile, One Direction took home three prizes at the BBC Radio 1 Teen Awards.
The boyband won in the Best British Music Act, Best British Single One Thing and Best British Album with Up All Night categories.
The X Factor was named the Best British TV Show, with judge Tulisa Contostavlos accepting the award.
