Coronation Street legend Jack Duckworth will exit the soap in a dramatic assisted suicide plotline which will grip the nation, a report has claimed.

Sources told a Sunday newspaper that Jack, played by Bill Tarmey, will "beg" girlfriend Connie Rathbone to help him to end his own life after being diagnosed with a terminal illness.

An insider told the News of the World that Connie refuses after being concerned that she might face a stint in jail.

The source revealed that Jack moves back to Coronation Street to live with Tyrone.

Corrie fans will see Jack perform "acts of kindness" for his neighbours during his last days in Weatherfield.

Soap bosses apparently had a change of heart and decided not to kill Jack off during the planned tram tragedy in December.

The source claimed that he will be diagnosed with an aggressive form of non-Hodgkin's Lymphoma.

A Corrie insider said: "Bill's been such a huge part of the show for so long that we wanted to give him a fitting send-off."

Tarmey decided to quit the show during the year of its 50th anniversary celebrations.

The 69-year-old has said that he wants to spend more time with his family.
