Much loved Scottish actress Elaine C.Smith joined stv.tv reporter Laura Boyd for a chat about her book Nothing Like a Dame, her forthcoming lead role in Calendar Girls and her love of panto. As well as these things, the discussion quickly turned to the hot topic of the moment: Susan Boyle has said she would love Elaine to play her in the movie of her life.

The Rab C Nesbitt star revealed: “I would be absolutely thrilled to do it.

“More than anything as an actor, to approach it from that way, it’s a fab story. Those scripts don’t come along very often.

“This wee woman living with her mum and her family in a small place with this great talent.”

Elaine clearly admires Susan but she’s no stranger to playing Su-Bo having portrayed a comedy version of the Britain’s Got Talent star whilst in pnato in Aberdeen last year.

Elaine told us: “In panto last year I realised it was a wonderful thing that the audience did – it’s never happened to me before.

“I came on as Susan Boyle with the gold dress and the wig, the audience decked it when I came out. I stood in the middle of the stage and sang I Dreamed a Dream and the audience became the audience in Britain’s Got Talent and it was the funniest and most moving thing.”

TALENTED SCOTS

So would comedienne / actress / singer Elaine consider the role? She certainly has the voice and the cheeky Scottish charm that the world fell in love with in Susan.

She said: “I am very complemented that she would even consider me, but I know the way these things work. Ive been in showbiz for too long.

“Michelle Pfeiffer will end up playing her in a fat suit. It will be Michelle Pfeiffer in a wig and a bad Irish accent!”

Coming from a similar working-class Scottish background to Su-Bo, Elaine added: “I do think I am the perfect choice, well not blowing my own trumpet, but I’m a good choice but who knows.”

Smith also revealed that she’s a fan of Scots singing granny Janey Cutler who last night made it into the Britain’s Got Talent final.

She told Laura: “I loved her. I love American Idol as well and they key for me is do they make me cry. So, I’ll be watching Janey Cutler.”

We will have more from this interview with Elaine in the coming days and you can also watch her on STV’s The Hour on the STV Player. Nothing Like a Dame is available in paperback now.
