STV has confirmed what fans have been hoping for months, that it will screen the UK premiere of the Australian crime drama Underbelly.
Tonight (Monday 24 May) Underbelly Series one reaches its explosive finale, bringing to an end the real-life tale of Melbourne’s violent gangland wars, which erupted in 1995 and continued to rage until 2004.
The series has been a huge hit with STV viewers, frequently being the most watched programme in Scotland on a Monday night. Around 350,000 viewers have tuned in every week to follow the hard-hitting story of Melbourne’s underworld, with the top performing episode attracting over half a million viewers. The series has also attracted over a quarter of a million video plays on the STV Player.
The second series, Underbelly: A Tale of Two Cities, was a similar ratings success when it aired in Australia last year. A prequel to the current series, it looks back to the crime wave of 1976, when hard drugs first really began to impact on Australia and drug money flooded the underworld.
Elizabeth Partyka, STV’s Channel Controller, said: “Underbelly has gone down a storm with our audience, and it’s clear that viewers were hooked on the gripping story from the outset. I’m thrilled to bring more of this high quality drama to the STV schedule later this year and I’m sure fans of the show will be just as compelled by the next series.”
The final episode of Underbelly goes out on Monday 24 May at 9pm on STV, with the uncut version on Thursday at 10.40pm.
Transmission details for Underbelly: A Tale of Two Cities will be confirmed at a later date.
