Dancing on Ice head judge Robin Cousins has defended his controversial decision to vote to keep Gary Lucy in the competition. The former Olympic champ told Holly Willoughby and Phillip Scofield on This Morning that The Bill star was a "technically better" skater than Danniella Westbrook.
The former EastEnders star left the show after Cousins gave the casting vote in favour of Gary and Maria Filippov's skate-off performance on Sunday night, even though the couple fell at the end of their routine.
Robin said: "From a skating point of view there was no contest. Gary is head and shoulders above all of the other contestants in terms of basic skating skill.
"This is a skating competition at the end of the day and Danniella was a fantasic performer who gives great energy, but as Nicky Slater said a lot of what she was doing was static."
Cousins praised Lucy's movement over the ice and explained that many viewers at home would be unable to see the edges and foot movements that helped him to judge the performances.
He insisted: "Gary's skating quality is what took him through. Christopher Dean spoke to me in the hallway and said that I had also thought that Gary deserved to go to the final.
"The fall happened at the end of the routine and even if it had occurred during the middle, there was still more technical difficulty in their routine."
