Katherine Kelly has signed up to star in a musical version of Coronation Street, according to a report. The actress plays Rovers barmaid Becky McDonald in the Manchester soap.
Sources told a Sunday newspaper that the new stage production has been commissioned to mark the 50th anniversary of the soap.
Insiders have revealed that Katherine has agreed to take a starring role in the new production.
The show will launch in Manchester before moving for an extended run in London's West End.
A source told the News of the World: "Katherine is a huge name to sign up.
"She's got this amazing voice that nobody knows about. This musical will be the centrepiece of our celebrations."
A Weatherfield insider revealed that Kelly has agreed a deal with Corrie bosses to leave the soap but she is expected to return to the soap after the run.
The insider said: "Becky is a very important character in the show and we don't want to lose her," a show insider said.
"Katherine really wants to do the musical so she'll probably take a few months off for it and then return.
"Doing both would probably be too much for her. But the details of how it's going to work are still being discussed."
