Britain's Got Talent judge Simon Cowell recently appeared on the US programme the Tonight Show to confirm that he is engaged to Mezghan Hussainy. The music mogul looked a little tense as the couple had their first "public kiss".
Asked about his decision to wed, Simon replied: "I kind of made a decision this year to make somebody happy, it's called giving back."
Not the enthusiastic reply of someone looking forward to embarking on married life.
Many of his friends have expressed surprise of his decision to get hitched, even his mother Julie admitted that she thought she would never see the day her son walked down the aisle.
However, Cowell's publicist Max Clifford told the Daily Mail: "Mezhgan is independent and says what she thinks and feels, and he likes that. He's the happiest I've seen him in the nine years I've worked with him."
Hussainy works as a make-up artist on American Idol where she met Cowell. Simon's American Idol colleague Ryan Seacrest has said that he was "surprised" that the couple were engaged.
Seacreast told US Weekly magazine that he had never noticed a spark between the couple, saying: "The only thing he's probably made out with is the mirror at American Idol."
Asked what kind of husband Cowell would make, he replied: "Self-centered, but generous. I hope they are building a life together there aren't too may mirrors around to distract him."
He added that he was not convinced that there would ever be a wedding, saying: "I've known him for so long and am waiting for this to be a big practical joke."
