Kym Marsh isn't worried about being axed from Coronation Street. The actress - who plays barmaid Michelle Connor in the ITV soap - insists rumours the cast are panicking about their futures when producer Phil Collinson takes over next month are wide of the mark.

She told new! magazine: "It was recently claimed the cast are worried new producer Phil Collinson will axe characters. I think you're prone to being apprehensive when a new boss arrives, but we're all excited, too."

Former Doctor Who executive Collinson - who famously got rid of Freema Agyeman as The Doctor's sidekick in 2007 - is said to be keen to liven up Weatherfield and has identified a list of possible of characters to ditch.

Vulnerable characters are set to include Norris Cole (Malcolm Hebden), Dev Alahan (Jimi Harkishin), Eileen Grimshaw (Sue Cleaver) and Maria Connor (Samia Smith).

One senior star said: "A new producer will always want to make a mark - bringing in new characters and getting rid of those they believe have gone stale.
