Roy Cropper to wed Hayley

Roy Cropper is set to legally wed partner Hayley during celebrations of the 50th anniversary of 'Coronation Street'.

The cafe owner will finally tie the knot with his sex-change lover, making their partnership official, following their blessing in 1999.

Hayley - who was born Harold Patterson - changed her name by deed poll to Hayley Cropper, but they never legally wed as when they first got together, UK law did not allow transsexuals to marry in their new gender.

The law changed in 2004 and Roy (David Neilson) and Hayley (Julie Hesmondhalgh) are keen to take advantage of it.

However, the impending nuptials cause friction as Roy wants a low-key ceremony while Hayley wants a huge party and their disagreements cause her to ban him from the bedroom.

However, Roy soon gives in as he wants to give Hayley a day to remember.

A source told The Sun newspaper: "Thankfully, Roy relents after Hayley puts the pressure on and it's a day for all the street's residents to celebrate."

The ITV soap will celebrate its 50th anniversary in December.
