A 'Doctor Who' Dalek fetched nearly £25,000 at auction yesterday (24.02.10).
The black painted prop mutant used in the 1985 edition of the BBC science fiction show raised £ £20,400 when it went under the hammer at Bonham's auction house in London. Another Dalek, a white model from 1988, made £15,600.
Also at the memorabilia auction were a number of items of clothing worn by the show's characters, including two sets of pyjamas and a French maid's outfit, both worn by Billie Piper - who played the Doctor's assistant Rose Tyler in 2005 and 2006 - which fetched £1,000 each and £3,600 respectively.
Collector Jason Joiner was pleased with his purchase of Rose's nightclothes, saying: "I bought her pyjamas because I wanted clothing from each main character. I won't be wearing them."
A waitress outfit, boots and underwear worn by pop singer Kylie Minogue when she appeared on a 'Doctor Who' Christmas special were sold for £3,120, while a blue shirt worn by ex-Doctor David Tennant fetched £1,260.
Other props commanding high prices included a steel section of Doctor Who's time travel machine, the Tardis, which fetched £3,840, and a silver Cyberman used in a November 1988 episode of the show, which fetched £4,080.
Bidder Martin Rowe speculated on why the memorabilia is so popular.
He told the Daily Mail newspaper: "In its own way it's art. You can associate with 'Doctor Who' because he's kind of in the real world.
"Some of the locations are real streets and council estates. He was someone who could walk into your life in a way that Luke Skywalker never could."
