BRITs Album of 30 Years: Will Oasis have the top album of the last 30 years? Pic: ©: STV
First up on the BRIT's Album of 30 Years is lead singer Chris Martin’s alternative rock band Coldplay, who have unsurprisingly made an appearance. Album A Rush of Blood to the Head has won numerous awards since its release in 2002.
With smash-hits Clocks and The Scientist featured on the album, it was evident that the band would win a BRIT for Best British in 2003. Does the album have what it takes to emulate the success this year?
Dido’s album No Angel was originally released in 1999 however it only came to light in 2001 with huge success. The Here with Me singer’s recent career may not have matched her worldwide success of the mid-noughties. However, her debut album has sold millions of copies internationally and provided us with smash hits Thank You, which hip hop star Eminem sampled on 2000 hit Stan.
The era of Britpop has a notable mention with Oasis’ (What’s the Story) Morning Glory, with no sign on Blur on the list could this be the year for the now separated band to notch a final award.
Scottish band Travis’ 1999 album The Man Who could well be an underdog in this category. With well-known sing-a-long songs including Why Does It Always Rain on Me? and Driftwood, the Scots four piece might have what it takes to bring back another Brit to Scotland. The album previously won Best British Album at the 2000 Brit Awards.
The oldest entry on the list comes from singer-songwriter Phil Collins with his third solo album No Jackets Required. Released back in 1985 to critical acclaim, the album peaked at number one across the world in the United States, Canada and Scandinavia. It may well be the earliest contenders for the best album of 30 years award, however Easy Lover Phil’s hits are timeless and worth fighting for.
The most recent nominee comes from Welsh songstress Duffy with her 2008 debut album Rockferry. Having only been around for the past couple of years does the Mercy signer have what it takes to steal the crown from heavyweights Coldplay and Oasis?
