The British Group is usually a heavyweight category, though seems to have been a bit overshadowed this year by all the female solo artists topping the charts.

Having said that, it seems hard to imagine humungous-sounding rockers Muse being overshadowed by anyone. Even God must find it hard to contain their sound within mere stadiums in order to ensure it doesn’t take over the entire world... well, that is if She exists, of course.

Gruff Manchester band Doves have been ploughing away from a number of years now with their indie stylings, and have become the sort of veterans a la Elbow that many think well overdue some awards recognition.

Friendly Fires are perhaps the perkiest of this bunch, with an accessible indie-dance sound that’s quite of the moment while still containing enough melodies that you could still imagine granddads and grannies bobbing away to it at bowling club discos. Well, maybe.

JLS have had a heady time since exiting The X Factor, and given that Simon Cowell isn’t happy with the amount of recognition his acts get at the BRITs, an award for the boy band may be savoured by the stupidly rich media mogul.

Finally we have Kasabian, much loathed by many for purportedly being an atrocious facsimile of acts such as Oasis and the Stones Roses put through an electronic shredder until any semblance of musicality has been eradicated. We couldn’t possibly comment.

Nominees:

  • Muse
  • Doves
  • Friendly Fires
  • JLS
  • Kasabian
