America's most controversial reality TV show is set to be screened in the UK. New programme Jersey Shore - which focuses on the lives of a group of young and fabulous fame hungry Italian-Americans - caused outrage across the US when it showed one of the show's female stars getting punched in the face by a man in a nightclub and laid out cold on the floor.
The man, gym teacher Brad Ferro, was later arrested and charged with assault and disorderly conduct.
The series focuses on a group of self proclaimed 'Guidos' and 'Guidettes' who live together in a summer house in New Jersey, where they look for love, work and explore the social scene.
The Italian-American community have been up in arms about the portrayal of their culture on the show, and the regular use of the word 'Guido', which was originally an ethnic slur.
A spokesperson for MTV responded: "Jersey Shore is a reality series that follows eight young adults spending their summer at the beach.
"The show continues MTV's history of documenting various subcultures, rites of passage of young people, and the ways they self-identify. The Italian-American cast takes pride in their ethnicity.
"We understand that this show is not intended for every audience and depicts just one aspect of youth culture."
The series has so far created two major stars from its US run, 21-year-old Nicole 'Snooki' Polizzi, whose big hair, revealing dresses and trashy talk marked her out from the other hopefuls. It has also drawn attention to Mike 'The Situation' Sorrentino - a musclebound hunk hungry for love.
Jersey Shore is set to screen in the UK from April.
