Andy Devine is leaving 'Emmerdale' after 12 years.
The 67-year actor - who has played the lazy, rude and boorish character of Shadrach Dingle in the ITV soap since he was introduced in 1998 - is set to semi-retire, although may return to the soap if he is needed for big storylines which come up.
A source told The Sun newspaper: "Andy loves the show but working on a soap is punishing and he needs time off. He'll dip in and out every couple of months but won't be a permanent fixture."
The soap star's character has seen him dependent on alcohol from the very first show when he arrived on the day of former character Butch Dingle's funeral, and got so drunk he fell asleep in church. Shadrach has, however, also occasionally surprised viewers with his sensitivity and support for his family.
