Popstar to Operastar judge Katherine Jenkins is facing a backlash from the world of classical music, a report has claimed. The show has been criticised of making a mockery of opera.
The Welsh singer had hoped that the show would help to make opera more popular.
Welsh National Opera singer Rebecca Evans said: "I watched bits of it and I thought it was a good laugh.
"But what they are doing bears no resemblance to what i do.
"It takes years of hard grafting to reach that standard. I really don't think somebody watching the show would then think of going to see the Barber of Seville."
The soprano added: "They will be calling more people opera singers when they are not opera singers. it's television gone mad."
Mezzo-soprano Sarah Connolly, said that the show did not capture the difficulty of performing opera.
She said: "It isn't just about singing. That's just the start.
"You have to study the psychology of the character and try to interpret the score on a deeper level. it's not just about getting the notes in the right order."
Katherine Jenkins defended the show, saying: "It shows how difficult it is to sing opera.
"Viewers can see the training sessions and understand what happens. The dumbing down label seems to be given to anything that makes classical music more accessible."
