The crowd trouble at a recent concert by X Factor stars JLS is to be investigated, according to a report.
Four fans required treatment in hospital and a further 56 sustained minor injuries when screaming fans surged toward the stage at the Millennium Point Christmas lights switch-on in Birmingham.
Council spokesman Steve Hollingworth claimed that the event organisers had been surprised by the level of interest in the boyband.
He explained: "The JLS appeal was obviously stronger than anyone predicted but many who failed to gain entry were not prepared to leave.
"When faced with the circumstances, we had no alternative but to close the event."
JLS have revealed that they were "devastated" to learn of the injuries suffered by fans.
The boyband issued a statement on their official website telling of their "sadness" over the incident.
Band member Marvin Humes: "We are devastated to see what happened at the BRMB event in Birmingham.
"We are so, so sad to see that people got injured at the gig.
"It was meant to be a great event with some other amazing acts on the bill and we're just gutted that everyone's day was spoilt.
"It should have been a great gig with others artists like Alexandra Burke and Calvin Harris."
Marvin explained that the police had taken the decision to cancel the event amid safety concerns.
He said: "We are very sorry for the people who were injured.
"After we opened the show the police took the decision to cancel the gig for public safety. The safety of our fans is so important to us.
"I have personally spoken to some of the other acts who were meant to perform and everyone was upset that people got injured and that they didn't get to see the rest of the show.
"We just hope that everyone who was injured has a speedy recovery.
"Marvin x."
