Olly Murs beaten to X Factor 2009 crown by Joe McElderry

Olly Murs’ dream of winning The X Factor came to an end tonight (Sunday) after losing out to Geordie contestant Joe McElderry in the second part of the final.

Mentored by Simon Cowell in the Over 25s category the 26-year-old Essex boy has been a huge hit with the audiences, with his cheeky chappy style and bubbly personality winning over supporters in droves.

The former energy advisor gave the competition his all – even missing his twin brother’s wedding last week to allow him to sing on the show!

Throughout the show, viewers have watched as Olly has displayed an impressive singing style and vocal range in performances of songs including The Beatles’ hit We Can Work It Out, the Jackson Five’s Can You Feel It and the Ella Fitzgerald song Bewitched.

Tonight he put on two fantastic performances, kicking off with The Beatles hit Twist and Shout, which he first sang during Movie Week, followed up the winner’s single, The Climb, which is from Hannah Montana: The Movie.

Last night he had put on three spectacular performances on last nigh kicking off with Stevie Wonder’s hit Superstition – complete with a bevy of beauties dancing alongside him – followed up by a duet with Robbie Williams on the superstar’s massive hit Angels, and concluded with Tina Turner's A Fool in Love.

But it just wasn't enough for Olly to win, and after going head-to-head with Joe McElderry who was in Cheryl's Boys category, Olly’s hopes of being this year’s champion finally came to an end. This is the second year in a row that Cheryl's contestant has won the competition.

He told host Dermot O'Leary: "I’m massively proud (of how well I've done) and Joe has been phenomenal every week…he deserves every minute of it.” A clearly disappointed Simon added: “I’m gutted for Olly (but) I’m thrilled for you because you are brilliant.”

Joe will now release his version of The X Factor winner’s single - which is available to download after midnight tonight and will be in shops from Wednesday - which will no doubt hit the number one spot in the Christmas charts as fans rush to buy it.

However it seems that not all people have been caught up in X Factor mania this year. A group has been set up on Facebook calling for people to refrain from buying the single and go for Rage Against the Machine’s 1992 hit Killing in the Name.
