X Factor judge Simon Cowell has tried to justify his decision to go to deadlock last week which led to Lucie Jones leaving the show with the lowest number of public votes.
Lucie was joined by John and Edward Grimes in the bottom two and so the judges had to choose between the acts.
Louis voted to save his act, Dannii Minogue and Cheryl Cole both voted to keep Lucie, but Simon voted to keep the twins, which sent the decision into deadlock.
The decision surprised many viewers as Simon has criticised the boys throughout the competition and had previously said that he would leave the country if they won.
As the show opened tonight Simon admitted that he had suffered this week because of his decision. He admitted: “This is not the best week that I’ve had in my life.”
He then said that it was the public that helped him make the decision to go to deadlock: “I trust the public, I always have and I always will.”
He also added that the decision was "out of respect" to the voters and to the twins.
There has been a huge backlash against the decision that meant John and Edward stayed in the competition, but their mentor, Louis Walsh, is adamant that the twins "deserve to be here."
Simon thanked the audience for giving him the time to speak and finished off by addressing and complimenting Lucie Jones: “Even though I’m sorry that you left, you left with dignity and I'm very proud of the way you behaved."
