X Factor dominates UK music charts

The X Factor continues its UK chart dominance with the series six finalists single You are not Alone going straight to number one.

The show has now dominated the charts for weeks with X Factor associates Alexandra Burke, Cheryl Cole, JLS, Leona Lewis and now the current X Factor finalists all clinching the number one single or album chart since the series six show kicked off.

The finalists cover version of the Michael Jackson song made a debut on last week’s show in aid of the London children's hospital Great Ormond Street. To date, it has already sold more than 193,000 copies, making it the second highest selling single of the year so far.

Simon Cowell decided to make the charity single an annual event after last year's cover version of Mariah Carey's Hero raised one million pounds for the charity Help for Heroes.

"Following last year's record in aid of Help For Heroes we decided we wanted to do something annually on the show to help good causes,” he said.

“I'm absolutely delighted for Great Ormond Street Hospital that The X Factor single has been able to help.

“It’s an incredibly deserving national cause and the work they do to give hope and happiness to so many brave children and families is absolutely invaluable and an inspiration. It’s a complete honour to be involved"

Contestant Joe McElderry was also ecstatic that the single had done so well for a good cause: “It’s absolutely fantastic to be part of a single that’s gone to Number one and is making a difference to people’s lives,” he said.

Joining the 12 finalists at the top spot this week was the 2006 X Factor winner Leona Lewis, with her second album Echo entering straight to number one in the albums chart.

The success of The X Factor finalists and Leona Lewis means there are now five X Factor associates within the top 11 of the UK Top 40 Singles Chart.
