Michelle Ryan is to appear in 'Doctor Who'.

The former 'EastEnders' actress - who auditioned for the role of the Doctor's assistant in 2006 but lost out to Freema Agyeman - will star in an Easter special of the BBC science-fiction series, and is delighted to finally be appearing.

Michelle, 24, said: "I'm a huge fan of 'Doctor Who' and very excited to be joining David Tennant and the rest of the team. It is such a fantastic show and I can't wait to get started."

The British actress will play "mysterious" Lady Christina de Souza in one of David Tennant's last episodes as the infamous doctor.

While executive producer and writer of the show Russell T Davies has remained tight lipped about the plot, he revealed the hit show's crew are delighted to have Michelle onboard.

Russell said: "Michelle is one of the most sought after young actors in the country and we are delighted to announce that she will be joining the team. As always the script is being kept strictly under wraps however we can reveal that Lady Christina is a woman with a mysterious past who's going to have a huge impact on the Doctor."

The episode, titled 'Planet of the Dead', is set to air this Spring, and will also feature an appearance from energetic comedian Lee Evans, 44, as a professor.

David Tennant, 37, will be replaced by Matt Smith, 26, who was announced as the 11th Doctor at the beginning of the year.
