Captain Mainwaring could be played by a woman in a film version of classic sitcom 'Dad's Army'.
Creator Jimmy Perry has revealed a studio is planning a remake of the BBC One war comedy and considering a female to star as the bank manager made famous by the late Arthur Lowe.
At a meeting of the Dad's Army Appreciation Society, Jimmy - who created the show with the late David Croft - said a script was being developed but he would not be writing it, but his revelation a woman may play Captain Mainwaring has caused outrage in some quarters.
Corinne Fulford, manager of the Dad's Army Museum in Thetford, Norfolk, where the series was filmed, said: ''We're talking about an iconic series. I can't even imagine how Captain Mainwaring could be played by a woman.''
There were women in the Home Guard from 1943 but Midge Gillies, who wrote a book about the Home Front, said a female casting wouldn't make much sense.
She said: ''A female Mainwaring sounds unlikely. It sounds like the film-makers are trying to update it. The humour of it was originally about class and this would confuse things.''
Of the seven main characters of the platoon only Ian Lavender, who played Frank 'Stupid Boy' Pike, is still alive.
Clive Dunn, who played Lance-Corporal Jack Jones, died last week at the age of 92.
