Duchess of Cambridge Kate Middleton and her husband Prince William were over the moon today as they watched Zara Phillips win silver at the Olympic Games.

Zara – who is William’s cousin - and the rest of the Team GB equestrian team made up of William Fox-Pitt, Mary King, Tina Cook and Nicola Wilson - finished 4.5 penalties behind gold medallists Germany. The New Zealand team came third.

And Kate and Wills were there to see the team's victory, along with a full team of Royal supporters including Zara’s mother Princess Anne, Prince Harry, and Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall.

It was a very proud day, as Zara made history as first member of the Royal Family to win an Olympic medal.

Her mother, Princess Anne, previously competed in the 1976 Montreal Olympics but failed to win a medal; her father Captain Mark Phillips won gold in the eventing at the 1972 Munich Olympics before marrying Princess Anne and becoming a member of the Royal family.

Zara’s victory comes despite the fact the horsewoman collected seven faults while riding her horse High Kingdom, knocking a fence down and picking up three penalties for being over the allowed time of 83 seconds.

She previously rode flawlessley though and Channel 4 racing presenter Alice Plunkett - who is Fox-Pitt's wife - said today's faults wouldn't count against her.

She said: "It is not Zara's fault there were little mistakes. It's a team, it isn't about one person.

"William's time faults yesterday were expensive. There are a whole host of reasons - it's never down to one person."

Kate certainly seemed impressed with Zara's sporting achievements; the Duchess has been a firm fixture at the Olympics since the beginning of the Games, and once again looked stunning, this time opting for a nautical look with a Breton striped top, which she teamed up with navy blue Smythe jacket.

The dutiful Duchess left her long brown locks down in her favourite loosely waved style.

The laid-back look was a far cry from Kate’s glamorous attire last night, which saw her dressed up to the nines in grey Roksanda Ilincic gown, with her long hair styled in a chic chignon, for her attendance at the Creative Industries cocktail reception.

William also opted for the causal look today, wearing an open-necked white shirt and grey suit jacket and wearing a pair of sunglasses to shield his eyes from the summer sun.

Yesterday onlookers were amused as they watched Kate fiddling with the buttons of her smart white blouse, while an entranced William looked on, as the couple watched Zara compete in the cross-country section of the three-day event.

But today, on the final leg of the equestrian competition, all eyes were firmly on Zara and her team mates as they rode to victory.
