Nick Grimshaw takes over from Chris Moyles on Radio 1 breakfast show

Nick Grimshaw has been confirmed as the new presenter of the Radio 1 breakfast show.

The announcement was made on Newsbeat at 10.30 am by Radio 1 controller Ben Cooper.

The staion's official Twitter account also Tweeted: “It's official! Nick Grimshaw aka @Grimmers is the new BBC Radio 1 Breakfast Show Presenter.”

The 27-year-old said: "I'm super excited to be hosting the iconic Radio 1 Breakfast Show, it’s been a dream of mine since the age of 11 and to be honest it hasn't really sunk in yet.

“I love Chris and have always looked up to him as one of the best broadcasters ever."

Fellow DJ Fearne Cotton was amongst the first to congratulate Grimmy, Tweeting: “Yaye well done @grimmers NEW Breakfast Show Dj!! ?#radio1”

The news follows Chris Moyles announcement this morning that he is to leave the slot in September, following eight and a half successful years on the show.

During a heartfelt speech, he told listeners: "We're off. I wanted to let you know. A couple more months of us, then it's someone else's turn. Thank you for listening."

Grimmy currently hosts the 10 till midnight slots on the station and is also a popular TV presenter on Channel 4 and E4.

He is well known for his love of fashion and has a host of famous friends, including Pixie Geldof, Alexa Chung and One Direction star Harry Styles.

Last year he wowed the Scottish crowds with his cheeky presenting style when he hosted the glamorous Scottish Style Awards.
