Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes have reached an out-of-court divorce settlement less than two weeks after the Batman Begins actress filed papers, citing “irreconcilable differences” as the reason for the split.

It is believed the Hollywood couple – previously dubbed TomKat – were keen to settle quickly in order to avoid a bitter divorce battle, with details of their personal lives dragged through the courts.

As a result, the specifics of the settlement are largely unknown and it is likely these will never be made public; however some details of the agreement have emerged.

The couple were locked in talks with lawyers over the weekend, sorting out details of custody, child support and splitting their joint assets, thought to be worth around £175 million.

In the settlement, reached just 11 days after Katie filed for divorce, the actress is believed to have gained “primary physical custody” of their six-year-old daughter Suri, while Tom will get “generous” visitation rights.

Tom meanwhile will retain almost all of his reported £230 million fortune, with Katie is said to be largely walking out of the marriage with what she came in with, in accordance with the couple’s prenuptial agreement – although she is believed to be getting up to £10 million on top of her own personal wealth of approximately £15-20 million.

Top Gun actor Cruise is also said to have agreed to “massive” child maintenance payments for Suri.

The agreement – which is apparently “extremely detailed” – also allegedly includes details on what Tom and Katie are allowed to tell Suri regarding religion – with Tom a member of the scientology religion, while Katie is a strict catholic.

Tom’s devotion to Scientology and his wish to raise Suri with those religious beliefs is thought to be one of the main reasons Katie filed for divorce from the actor.

A statement released on behalf of the couple said: “We are committed to working together as parents to accomplish what is in our daughter Suri's best interests.

“We want to keep matters affecting our family private and express our respect for each other's commitment to each of our respective beliefs and support each other's roles as parents.”

US celebrity attorney Debra Opri told Daybreak this morning that both parties have triumphed in the settlement. She said: “They both won. Katie won because she has primary physical custody of her daughter and it seems she will be raising her the way she sees fit.”

The lawyer also said “for all intents and purposes Tom got what he wanted” because details of his religious beliefs have been largely kept under wraps.

Debra also noted that the divorce settlement had been reached in record time, adding: “In this instance I do believe Katie has her strategies in place an they worked for her. She got out of LA, she went to New York when they had a residence, enrolled Suri in catholic school - and she had the guidance of her father and a prenup specialist.”

Meanwhile Katie’s attorney Jonathan Wolfe has slammed speculation about the divorce terms and said the exact details will not be revealed.

"There are numerous inaccuracies in the reports regarding the purported contents of the agreement reached between the parties," Wolfe said in a statement to E! News.

"The agreement is confidential and its terms will not be disclosed."

News that Katie had filed for divorce emerged on June 29. Jonathan Wolfe said in a statement: ''This is a personal and private matter for Katie and her family. Katie's primary concern remains, as it always has been, her daughter's best interest.''

Tom’s representative also released a statement which read: ''Kate has filed for divorce and Tom is deeply saddened and is concentrating on his three children. Please allow them their privacy.''

The couple married in a romantic ceremony in an Italian castle in 2006 following a whirlwind relationship and had one daughter together, Suri.

Cracks started to appear in the relationship earlier this year, when the couple – famed for their appearances on the red carpet  together – were rarely spotted in each other’s company.
